 IES backpacks

On Wednesday, April 17th, over 30 students at Independence Elementary School received backpacks from the B.L.A.S.T. (Backpacks Launching Academic Success for Tomorrow) program. The First United Methodist Church of Hammond along with many sponsors and donors were able to supply these backpacks to many children throughout the Tangipahoa
Parish School System and Head Start programs. The supplies are to help
the students during the summer continue to learn through reading, coloring and

 Bone Conduction Music

 Students in Joshua Blackwell's 8th Grade Science class at Sumner Middle School listen to music without speakers using a process called "Bone Conduction". Bone Conduction was discovered by the almost completely deaf, but famous composer, Ludwig van Beethoven.  For instructions on how to duplicate this demonstration, contact joshua.blackwell@tangischools.org.

Keep Calm and Teach On

Half Day Thursday, May 23

In addition to Friday, May 24, 2013 being a half-day of school for students, the Tangipahoa Parish School Board voted to make Thursday, May 23, 2013 a half-day for students. Schools will be dismissed Thursday and Friday, May 23 and 24 at the regular half-day dismissal time. Friday, May 24 will be the last day of school for students.

Sumner High Class of 2013 gifted the school by naming the school's halls and having signs made to be placed in the school.  With these names: Jewel, Cowboy, Pride, Spurs, and Lariat; the seniors say, "Goodbye."  Principal Lisa Fussell is shown above with Kati Fussell and Taylor Sharkey (class officers).

Ponchatoula High Talented Art student, Joseph Catalanello

Ponchatoula High Talented Art student, Joseph Catalanello, shows a painting he has created to donate to the Tangi Humane Society Fundraiser .  The event will held at Cate Square in Hammond on Saturday, May 11, 2013 from 10:00 - 4:00 p.m.  There is free admission and art work by Kitty Faulkenberry's Talented Art students will be on sale to benefit the Humane Society.

The Jewel Sumner Middle School football team traveled to the campus of   LSU recently where they toured the football facilities and weight room.   The trip was planned and coordinated by Coach Chris Fussell.  The young men above pose with the Mike the Tiger statue.

Children of the Holocaust

 
The 6th grade students at Champ Cooper have been studying the Holocaust in their Social Studies and Reading class. On April 25, 2013 all of the 6th grade students participated in a Video Conference, "Children of the Holocaust."   Students connected with the Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center of Nassau County, Long Island, New York where they heard the experiences of Mrs. Lily Perry a Holocaust survivor. Mrs. Perry, a former teacher, commended all the 6th grade students for their knowledge of the Holocaust and their outstanding behavior during the conference.

Nesom Middle Students get ready for Algebra I EOC test

Eighth Graders in Ronald Rollins' Algebra 1 class at Nesom Middle School are working hard to prepare for their upcoming End Of Course Exam only a week after completing the LEAP test. The students use TI-84 graphing calculators and complete their course work online. Sumner High students (and one Sumner Middle School student, David Simmons) visited Richard Murphy Hospice House in Hammond recently, along with Colton
Splane, a senior in Mrs. Deana Simmons senior project class. As part of Colton's product for senior project, he (with help from others in the class) pulled weeds, raked, cleaned, and prepared the garden and patio area for the planting of some spring flowers (all donated by Bracy's Nursery of Amite). The sanctuary was being enjoyed by one of the patients before the students left to head home. Common Core State Standards Initiative

With approximately  46 states  adopting the Common Core State Standards, the Louisiana Department of Education and the Tangipahoa Parish School System has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform education in our  state and district and improve our student’s opportunities to compete globally. Currently, for too many students drop out or graduate from high school without the knowledge and skills required for success, closing doors and limiting their post-high school options. The Tangipahoa Parish School System is committed to increasing the number of students who earn high school diplomas and enroll in college or have a career after graduation. Implementing the Common Core State Standards is a critical step toward ensuring that all students in the Tangipahoa Parish School System receive the education they need to become College or Career Ready.

HJHMS Lapbooks

Creating Lapbooks at HJHMS

Abrille Dixon's classes at Hammond Junior High Magnet School are currently working on a lapbook project demonstrating what they have learned about the Moroccan Market based on the Moroccan Market Writing Prompt. On their lapbook, each student must include a mini foldable, a paragraph about a personal travel or shopping experience that was similar to going to the Moroccan Market, and at least three vocabulary words with definitions. They are encouraged to make the lapbook as colorful and creative as possible and to make sure their lapbook appeals to as many of the five senses as possible.
